Ten Cabo Destination Wedding Ideas

I’ve spent my share of time in Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos over the years. I’ve also organized some fabulous Cabo destination weddings there, including the one pictured here. It’s a great location – there’s nothing quite like those beautiful beaches and ocean views! Plus, Cabo is just a quick two hour flight from the west coast and boasts amazing culture, food and activities. There are also endless options for embracing Mexican flavor in your wedding décor and details. So grab your sunscreen and your passport and let’s go!

Mexican patterns and prints. Be inspired by the vibrant details of traditional Mexican design! This could include colorful textiles, embroidery, geometric detailing, folk art or beautifully patterned tiles. Incorporating otomi fabric and color into your tables is also one of the prettiest ways to pay tribute to your Cabo wedding destination.

Tequila. You can’t have a Mexican destination wedding without a little tequila. Use hand painted shot glasses instead of escort cards and have guests toast you with Don Julio 1942 instead of champagne. Include tequila in signature cocktails. Or why not name your tables after different kinds of tequila? A tequila tasting during cocktail hour might just be on the menu too.

Embrace the outdoors. When the weather is as good as it is in Cabo, you want to enjoy it! Have an outdoor ceremony taking in some of those incredible ocean views, either during the day or at sunset.  (Just remember summer days can be hot, hot, hot.) Treat your guests to a poolside or beachside cocktail hour. And dance the night away under the stars at an outdoor reception. There’s nothing more atmospheric than candlelit tables under string lights and lanterns on a balmy tropical night!

Local cuisine. One of the best parts of having a wedding in Cabo is that you can embrace the local cuisine! Serve a Mexican menu from start to finish or as a special touch. For example, you could set up a Mexican-themed dessert station or fresh salsa bar. Or serve a selection of nachos, tamales and churros as late night snacks instead!

Comfy lounge areas. To capture the laid back glamour of Cabo, include beautiful lounge areas in your décor in crisp white or rattan, with colorful pillows. And it doesn’t just have to be at the reception. We set up couches instead of chairs at the ceremony for one of my Cabo couples and their guests loved it!

Love language. A fun way to reference a Mexican wedding destination is to include Spanish words and phrases in some of your signage. For example, you could have a cake topper that says ‘Viva el Amor’ or chair signs marked ‘Señor’ and ‘Señora’. Otherwise, opt for a bilingual ceremony or a traditional lasso ceremony as part of your vow exchange.

Cabo themed welcome bags. Fun welcome bags are a must for destination weddings. They’re a great way to spoil your guests and give them a taste of what they can expect from the location. Have a peek at my ideas for what to put in a Cabo San Lucas wedding welcome bag here.

Mexican flora. Bring some of the local flora into your celebration by incorporating tropical plants and flowers like bougainvillea or palm leaves, into your décor. You could also go for a touch of desert chic, using succulents and cacti as statement accents. Remember, Cabo is where the desert meets the sea.

Fun favors. Support local crafters with your choice of favors and you’ll also be sending guests home with a special memento of their holiday. For example, colorful maracas for late night dancing, hand blown glass for a local shop or natural palm hand fans for the ceremony.

Pinata cake. Not a cake person? A fun alternative is a wedding cake shaped piñata. Also, your guests will love it – young and old alike!

Are you considering a Cabo destination wedding or vacation this summer?
